This guide has been designed to provide answers to frequently asked questions concerning The Mineral, Metals & Materials Society’s (TMS) technical and administrative activities. The guide addresses technical programming, publication, professional development and other organizational issues.

ORGANIZATIONAL
  • How can I access the key resources I need as a TMS volunteer?

  • A concise listing of key resources and contact information is presented in the Key Resources for TMS Volunteers and Members one-page summary.

  • How do I get involved in a TMS technical or administrative committee?

  • Identify interest in being involved in TMS leadership activities through by completing this online Leadership Opportunites Interest form.

  • How do I update my committee information, such as the roster, and submit committee minutes or meeting agendas?

  • TMS staff will provide this service to you. Simply e-mail the TMS Technical Department link to techcteliaison@tms.org.

  • How do I access the TMS membership directory?

  • Only TMS members have access to the membership directory. Members may log in for instant access through the members-only area of the web site. A valid password and username are required for login.

  • How do I obtain funding for a new idea for a TMS product or service?

  • The general Special Project Proposal form should be completed and submitted along with suggestions for a new one-time endeavor, sustainable society-level product, service or member benefit. A Divisional Fast Track Special Project Proposal form should be completed for a one-time division-directed endeavor that creates and/or improves a TMS product, service or member benefit. The latter proposal must be approved and signed by the division chair prior to submission.

  • How do I propose a project for development as an Internet resource?

  • To propose that TMS undertake a new web initiative, the Information Technology Project Proposal Form must be completed and submitted for review by the TMS Information Technology Committee. (Be thorough in completing the form.) The committee will analyze the data provided on the form and determine whether to advance the idea to the TMS Board of Directors for their review and approval.

  • How do I become a member of TMS?

  • Simply complete an online membership application.

TECHNICAL PROGRAMMING
  • How do I submit an abstract for an upcoming technical conference?

  • Upcoming conferences that are open for abstracts can be accessed through the TMS Conference Management System CMS-Plus.

  • How do I propose a symposium for an upcoming technical conference?

  • Upcoming conferences that are open for symposium proposals can be accessed through CMS-Plus.

  • How do I propose an honorary symposium for an upcoming technical conference?

  • Each TMS technical division has an honorary symposium policy that should be reviewed. Honorary symposia can be proposed for the TMS Annual Meeting only. The proposal can be submitted through CMS-Plus.

  • How do I request TMS sponsorship of a meeting not organized by TMS?

  • To request sponsorship of a meeting not organized by TMS, submit the Request for Co-Sponsorship (In Name Only) form.

  • How do I obtain approval for a specialty conference?

  • To obtain approval for a specialty conference, submit the Request for TMS Sponsorship of Specialty Conference form.

  • How do I arrange for special symposium features?

  • If a symposium organizer wishes to have additional features in conjunction with the symposium technical program, such as dining, special publications or electronic equipment features, the items should be outlined on the symposium proposal form in CMS-Plus. It is advisable to contact TMS Meeting Services well in advance of the meeting to confirm any special requests.

  • How do I obtain meeting registration fee assistance as a presenter or for an invited speaker?

  • TMS technical divisions can be a source of financial aid for presenters for partial or full meeting registration fee assistance when individuals are lacking the financial resources to participate in the conference. Aid may also be available when incentive to secure an invited speaker is necessary to assure the success of a symposium. Assistance for the 2006 TMS Annual Meeting is available on a limited basis and requires submission of the Registration Waiver Form when posted by a symposium organizer before the stated deadline.

  • How do I obtain what I need to apply for a visa to attend a TMS meeting?

  • If you are a foreign visitor who requires a visa to attend a meeting, an official invitation letter for a specific meeting needs to be prepared. Typically, a form letter for a specific meeting is available on the meeting web site. It is advisable to request an official invitation letter well in advance of the meeting.   • How can I plan what technical presentations and other events I would like to attend at a TMS meeting?

  • The TMS Personal Conference Scheduler (PCS) is an online resource that contains a complete and detailed listing of all programming and activities associated with upcoming TMS meetings (inclusive of technical programming, with abstracts; administrative meetings; and social functions). You can build a schedule, item by item, or add entire symposia with a single click. Access the PCS at http://pcs.tms.org/CMS/PCS.nsf.

  • How can I find out more about upcoming technical meetings?

  • TMS maintains a global meetings calendar for meetings held in the materials and metallurgical fields, at http://www.tms.org/meetings/meetings.asp. At this site, you can search for meetings by year, technical division, and technical area.

  • How do I get answers to other TMS programming-related questions?

  • Programming related questions should be e-mailed to Christina Raabe, manager of technical programming at raabe@tms.org

PUBLICATIONS
  • How do I submit an article for publication in JOM?

  • To propose your paper for publication in JOM, submit an abstract of the paper using the abstract submission form on the JOM home page. As JOM follows an editorial calendar that emphasizes different technical topics every month, it is important to review this calendar before submitting an abstract to determine if your paper will fit with upcoming technical topics. The technical emphasis calendar can be found at http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/JOM/techcalendar.html.

  • How do I submit an article for publication in JEM?

  • To propose your paper for publication in JEM, submit an abstract of the paper using the abstract submission form. As JEM follows an editorial calendar that emphasizes different technical topics every month, it is important to review this calendar before submitting an abstract to determine if your paper will fit with upcoming technical topics.   • How do I submit an article for publication in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions?

  • Metallurgical and Materials Transactions publishes contributions on all aspects of research and significant engineering advances in materials science and metallurgy. To propose your paper for publication in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions, follow the author guidelines.

  • How do I submit an article for publication in a conference proceedings?

  • If you have an accepted abstract in a symposium that is being published in proceedings by TMS, you will receive a message from proceedings@tms.org which provides submission information and formatting instructions. If you do not receive this message, check the Proceedings Composition Home Page for a listing of all upcoming symposia which are being published as a proceedings; click on the appropriate link to get instructions for paper preparation and article submission for that symposium.

  • How do I submit an article for publication in TMS Letters?

  • TMS Letters publishes contributions from TMS conferences that are not otherwise planned for publication. All submissions to TMS Letters must be two-page technical updates with appropriate subject categories identified; a transfer of copyright form must be completed and submitted through CMS with the technical update as a PDF file. Submission is required approximately two-weeks prior to the start of the conference.

  • How can I access TMS publications?

  • TMS members and nonmembers alike can review tables of contents, paper abstracts, and other detail through the Knowledge Resource Center, where print and electronic publications are available for download.

  • How do I propose a proceedings volume or other book for publication?

  • Prospective editors can propose a publication using CMS-Plus; click on the “Propose a Proceedings” link from the main menu. It will be helpful to you to review the Editors Guide prior to submitting the proposal.

  • How do I propose a non-conference publication to TMS?

  • If you would like to propose a nonconference publication to TMS, download and complete the Book Proposal form.

  • How do I get a copyright form and when should I use it?

  • Each TMS publication option has its own copyright form which should be completed and submitted with every manuscript.

  • How do I get answers to other TMS publications-related questions?

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • How do I nominate someone for an award?

  • You can nominate a deserving colleague for recognition through the TMS honors and awards program by submitting a nomination form along with supporting documents. The TMS honors and awards web pages provide an overview as well as descriptions of TMS society-level awards, division-level awards and joint awards with other organizations.

  • How do I propose a continuing education short course?

  • Continuing education through short courses, online educational offerings, and other mechanisms should be discussed with Christina Raabe, manager of continuing education. E-mail raabe@tms.org.

  • How can I find out more about the Professional Engineering exam?

  • The Professional Engineering exam is used to identify candidates minimally competent for professional registration. More information, including access to a free online study guide, is available on the TMS professional registration pages.

  • How can I become a program evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)?

  • Volunteer program evaluators are always in demand. For more information, please visit http://www.tms.org/Education/accreditation.html.

  • How can I participate in the Young Leaders Program?

  • If you are a professional active in the materials sciences and under the age of 35, you can become part of the Young Leaders Program. Simply complete and submit the Young Leaders Participation form.

  • How can I become a Young Leader Intern?

  • The TMS Young Leader Internship Program enhances the professional development of dynamic young people by helping them participate in TMS activities, become better acquainted with TMS, make important contacts with society leaders and network with prominent society members. Use the Young Leader Internship Application form to apply.
