Technical Divisions Overview

TMS derives its strength from its members, who take a hands-on approach to shaping the policy, programming, and publications of the society by volunteering to serve within our technical divisions and committees. Initially, the volunteer member becomes involved by joining a committee within one of the society's five technical divisions:

Each division comprises numerous technical committees, which serve a particular interest area. View the Committee Home Page for a complete overview of the divisions and their committees. View the TMS Volunteer Organizational structure.

THE DIVISIONS' ROLES

The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society's technical divisions have four primary roles: governance; providing timely and responsive programming, publications, and continuing education; providing guidance to TMS functions; and to stimulate global unity among professionals who share technical interest with the division.

  • Governance: Technical divisions have been empowered by TMS to organize as they feel necessary to accomplish their goals and objectives. The division's organization and structure appears within its bylaws and is approved by the TMS Board of Directors. The organizational make-up of the division consists of one representative from each of the technical committees, normally the chairperson of the committee, functional committee representatives for programming, publications, education, information technology, membership and student affairs, and the divisions executive officers which are the technical division chairperson and vice chairperson.
  • Provide Timely and Responsive Programming, Publications and Continuing Education: The principle responsibility of the TMS technical division is to provide timely and responsible technical programming, publications, and continuing education for its professional constituency. The first line of responsibility for these activities rests with the divisions technical committees. The role of the division is to encourage its technical committees to develop high-quality programming, publications, and continuing education activities. The division supports these activities by providing quality control measures and funding as necessary.
  • Provide Guidance to TMS Functions: An important role that TMS technical divisions perform is their support of TMS functions in the areas of education, information technology, membership, and student affairs development. Division appointments are needed for society-level committees in each of these areas.
  • Stimulate Global Unity Among Professionals Who Share Technical Interests with the Division: TMS is an international as well as an interdisciplinary society. Its membership spans both the geographical and technological globe. The technical division, through its programming, publications, and continuing education activities, can attract world attention. Thus, the division is in a unique position to stimulate global unity among professionals who share technical interests with the division. TMS technical divisions are to assume a worldwide perspective in their leadership, while promoting innovation and understanding of their technical interest area.
