Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
TMS Board Member
Zi-Kui Liu

Welcome to the Electronic, Magnetic, and Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD) which is composed of fourteen technical and administrative committees. TMS, as you know, is a member-driven society, and as such, your active participation is critical to the well being of the society and of our division in particular. To meet your technical, professional, and organizational needs, we seek your input and urge you to be pro-active. By working together we can all realize a high degree of technical synergy and the improvements are endless. This collaboration is very important in an age of multi- and inter-disciplinary science and engineering. EMPMD is the perfect platform to promote far-reaching science across the disciplines of materials research, and our challenge is to make sure that your needs are satisfied. The best way to face this challenge is for you to contribute to the development and innovations of EMPMD by getting acquainted with the technical and administrative committees and visiting them during the two TMS yearly meetings, and by contacting the committee chairs or me if you have any suggestions for a symposium, a new committee, or a public-related activity. We want to hear from you, and together we can make the EMPMD of TMS central to our own professional life.

CONTACT CHAIRPERSON

Division LogoThe Electronic, Magnetic & Photonic Materials Division (EMPMD) promotes technical exchange and assists in the professional development of its members through programming, publications and continuing education.

It addresses the synthesis and processing, structure, properties, and performance of electronic, photonic, magnetic and superconducting materials as well as the materials used in packaging and interconnecting such materials in device structures.

GETTING INVOLVED

As a committee member, you have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities through the division:

  • Develop Technical Programming
EMPMD organizes technical programming, which includes invited speakers and distinguished lecturers, for the TMS Annual Meeting, the annual Electronic Materials Conference (in association with the Device Research Conference) and selected meetings in co-sponsorship with collegial international organizations. The division holds one honorary symposium at the TMS Annual Meeting in honor of the division’s distinguished scientist/engineer. For greater detail on technical programming, visit CMS-plus and the Global Meetings Calendar.
  • Contribute to Publications
EMPMD furthers publications, particularly monographs (i.e., the distillation of workshop proceedings) and the archival Journal of Electronic Materials, which publishes division-sponsored proceedings papers as well as rigorously reviewed stand-alone papers. The division also contributes to conference proceedings that have multi-divisional support.
  • Facilitate Life-Long Learning
EMPMD encourages materials professionals to continually upgrade their theoretical and practical knowledge. To facilitate this, the division conducts workshops and short courses. Additionally, the division promotes professional registration, bestows scholarships, and participates in the accreditation of programs at U.S. academic institutions.
  • Recognize Exemplary Work
There are numerous society-level awards bestowed by TMS that recognize accomplishments in the electronic materials field; in addition, the division recognizes outstanding members through the following awards:
      • Electronic Materials Best Paper Award
      • Hume-Rothery Award
      • John Bardeen Award
      • Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award
      • Distinguished Service Award.
