MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
|
EPD NEEDS YOU! The EPD relies on volunteers from around the globe, like you, to meet our objectives of providing extensive and relevant technical programming, publications, and continuing education. In return, you get to meet and work with dedicated teams who believe in EPD’s mission while developing yourself professionally.
There are several ways to contribute: you could serve on technical committees, from which all of EPD’s activities are driven, you could help organize timely and relevant technical symposia, you could write and present a technical paper, or you could nominate a deserving professional for an EPD or TMS award. I encourage you to get involved to continue to build a strong home for the international practioneers of the science and technology for the sustainable extraction, processing, and recycling of minerals and metals.
I also want to hear from you to learn your opinions and suggestions on how we can improve the value you get from your TMS membership. Please email or call me with your thoughts and suggestions.

The main focus of the EPD is the sustainable extraction and processing of minerals and metals from mined ores, concentrates, and recycled materials using pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical, and electrochemical processes, emphasizing the technical, engineering, environmental, and economic principles of such processes.
EPD also addresses further processing of nonferrous metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt, precious metals, lead, zinc, and tin and their products by techniques such as refining, purification, alloying, solidification, thermomechanical treatment, and surface coating into finished and semifinished products. Recognition of technical excellence in the field is also a key EPD activity.
Within this framework, EPD provides a forum for interaction between professionals from all areas of the extraction and processing communities, including operators and managers from industry, academics, and consultants, through extensive and relevant programming at conferences and international symposia, publications such as conference proceedings and journals, and continuing education via short courses and seminars. Within TMS’s mission of “nurture the core, grow the future”, the Extraction and Processing Division (EPD) certainly represents the core with direct roots back to the founding of AIME from which TMS grew.
The EPD provides a forum for volunteers to influence the direction of their careers, the division, the parent society, and the field of minerals, metals, and materials by providing avenues to:
- Develop Technical Programming
EPD organizes technical programming, which includes invited speakers and distinguished lecturers, for the TMS Annual Meeting, the TMS Fall Extraction & Process Metallurgy Meeting, TMS specialty meetings and selected meetings in co-sponsorship with collegial international organizations. For greater detail on technical programming, click on the ProgramMaster menu found on each conference home page.
- Contribute to Publications
EPD publishes many papers from its symposia in stand-alone proceedings and in the TMS Annual Meeting proceedings volume, EPD Congress. It also sponsors the publication of textbooks and contributes individual papers and topics to periodicals produced by TMS.
- Facilitate Life-Long Learning
EPD encourages materials professionals to continually upgrade their theoretical and practical knowledge of various extractive metallurgical processes. To facilitate this, the division sponsors short courses in conjunction with TMS meetings, promotes professional registration, bestows scholarships, and participates in the accreditation of programs at U.S. academic institutions.
- Recognition
In addition to the numerous society-level awards bestowed by TMS that recognize accomplishment in the extractive and process fields, there are specific division-level awards that recognize excellence within EPD's scope of activities:
- Extraction & Processing Distinguished Lecturer Award
- Extraction & Processing Science Award
- Extraction & Processing Technology Award
- Extraction & Processing Distinguished Service Award
