MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
|
Welcome to the Light Metals Division (LMD). The Light Metals Division started a re-organization process to expand its services for the benefits of our members and customers. LMD is now composed of the five technical committees Aluminium Production, Aluminium Processing, Magnesium, Energy and Recycling and Environmental. With these changes we would like to expand our services and activities along the process chain of Aluminium and to consider the growing interests and importance in energy related topics of Light Metals Production and Processing. Our division through our committees schedule and organize symposia covering all aspects of Light Metals along the process chain, their applications and their science to advance the knowledge of our field with fundamental studies and practical solutions. With our work we seek to reach our members and customers in industry, universities and national laboratories from all over the world.
A part of our work is also to organize educational workshops. It is a strategic goal of LMD to expand this activity to serve the increasing demands in education of the Light Metals community worldwide. Presently, the development of an extensive and sustainable education program is on the way to fulfill the present and future needs of our members and customers.
The committees of the Light Metals Division are only as strong and as active as the members who participate in them. We are constantly looking for new members to help us in the many ways needed to run a members-driven organization. I invite you to join one of our committees and to help us in the development of an attractive professional service for the Light Metals community.
CONTACT CHAIRPERSON
|
The Light Metals Division (LMD) is organized to serve professionals in both the traditional (aluminum, magnesium, beryllium, titanium, lithium, and other reactive metals) and emerging light metals (composites, laminates, etc.) fields.
This service encompasses recycling technologies and activities related to the materials mentioned. This is accomplished by involvement of academic, research, technical and operational activities toward practical applications of technology.
As a committee member, you have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities through the division:
- Develop Technical Programming
LMD organizes technical programming, which includes invited speakers and distinguished lecturers, for the TMS Annual Meeting, TMS specialty meetings and selected meetings in co- sponsorship with collegial international organizations.
For greater detail on technical programming, visit CMS-plus and the Global Meetings Calendar.
- Contribute to Publications
LMD reviews and publishes many papers from its symposia in proceedings volumes, including the annual edition of Light Metals and Magnesium Technology. The division also sponsors the publication of textbooks and contributes individual papers and topics to periodicals produced by TMS.
- Facilitate Life-Long Learning
LMD encourages materials professionals to continually upgrade their theoretical and practical knowledge in the aluminum and other nonferrous metals fields. To facilitate this, the division sponsors a short course in Aluminum Electrolysis as well as other short courses in conjunction with TMS meetings. LMD also promotes professional registration, bestows scholarships, and participates in the accreditation of programs at U.S. academic institutions.
- Recognition
In addition to the numerous society-level awards bestowed by TMS that recognize accomplishments in the light metals fields, there are specific division-level awards that recognize excellence within LMD's scope of activities:
- Light Metals Distinguished Service Award
- Light Metals Technology Award
- Magnesium Technology Award
- Light Metals Award (best paper)
- Light Metals Division JOM Best Paper Award
