MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
|
We are in the midst of revitalizing our division to make it more valuable to our members, especially those in industry. This is an exciting time for MPMD, and we would like to see you help with our initiatives for new value-added opportunities for the professional. We are determined to provide services and products to assist you in these times of never-ending change for the materials processing community.
Our current initiatives revolve around a desire to: Enhance Public Awareness of the Importance of Manufacturing; Provide Professional Development Opportunities to Offset Short Engineer Half-Life; Identify and Promote Best Practices for Academic and Corporate Collaboration in Manufacturing; and Identify Specific Technologies Relevant to Distributed Manufacturing and Provide Programming in These Areas.
Join with us in creating a new future for MPMD, be it to participate in any of our committees, symposia organization or the Division Initiatives. Call me, and I will help you get started!

In its broadest scope, the Materials Processing & Manufacturing Division (MPMD) covers manufacturing from product design to production, integrating process control technology into manufacturing (e.g., applying concepts from the intelligent processing of materials to intelligent design and manufacture), and basic and applied research into key materials technologies that impact manufacturing processes (e.g., solidification, powder metallurgy, and shaping and forming). The modeling, simulation and control of materials as they affect manufacturing processes is also a key focus of the division.
As a committee member, you have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities through the division:
- Develop Technical Programming
MPMD organizes technical programming, which includes invited speakers and distinguished lecturers, for the TMS Annual Meeting, Materials Science & Technology Conference, TMS specialty meetings and selected meetings in co-sponsorship with collegial international organizations. For greater detail on technical programming, visit CMS-plus and the Global Meetings Calendar.
- Contribute to Publications
MPMD publishes many papers from its symposia in stand-alone proceedings. It also sponsors the publication of textbooks and contributes individual papers and topics to periodicals produced by TMS.
- Facilitate Life-Long Learning
MPMD encourages materials professionals to continually upgrade their theoretical and practical knowledge while recognizing that the engineering application of advanced materials requires the integration of design and manufacturing with materials science and engineering. To facilitate this, the division sponsors short courses in conjunction with TMS meetings, promotes professional registration, sponsors student contests and participates in the accreditation of programs at U.S. academic institutions.
- Recognition
There are numerous society-level awards bestowed by TMS that recognize accomplishments in materials processing and manufacturing. In addition, there are MPMD-specific awards:
- Bruce Chalmers Award
- MPMD Distinguished Scientist/Engineer Award
- MPMD Distinguished Service Award
The MPMD supports the following committees. Please select an individual committee below to learn more.
Computational Materials Science and Engineering Committee
Global Innovations Committee
Nanomechanical Materials Behavior Committee
Phase Transformations Committee
Powder Materials Committee
Process Technology and Modeling Committee
Shaping and Forming Committee
