Structural Materials Division
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
TMS Board Member
Eric M. Taleff

Welcome to the Structural Materials Division of TMS! Structural materials are everywhere – from medical implants to skyscrapers – and the SMD reflects that diversity in its thirteen technical committees.

If you have attended a TMS meeting, if you’ve read a TMS publication, or if you’ve visited the TMS website, you have already encountered the SMD. Our activities include extensive technical programming at TMS meetings and specialty conferences; publications that range from cutting-edge research papers to general-interest technology overviews; career-enriching short courses; and many opportunities for professional advancement. Perhaps our most important function is to provide you the opportunity to network with peers who share your interests and can add to your expertise.

As you visit our web space, please keep in mind that the SMD is here to serve the needs of our professional members. If you find something of interest, join in. Attend a technical committee meeting; organize a symposium; or nominate a colleague for one of our prestigious awards. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, tell us. We are always looking for new ways to serve our members.

Thanks for stopping by the Structural Materials Division!

Division Logo The Structural Materials Division (SMD) has been chartered to cover the varied aspects associated with the science and engineering of load-bearing materials, including studies into the nature of a material's physical properties based upon its microstructure and operating environment.

GETTING INVOLVED

As a committee member, you have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of activities through the division:

  • Develop Technical Programming
SMD organizes technical programming, which includes invited speakers and distinguished lecturers, for the TMS Annual Meeting, Materials Science & Technology Conference, TMS specialty meetings and selected meetings in co-sponsorship with collegial international organizations. For greater detail on technical programming, click on the ProgramMaster menu found on each conference home page.
  • Contribute to Publications
SMD publishes many papers from its symposia in stand-alone proceedings. It also sponsors the publication of textbooks and contributes individual papers and topics to periodicals produced by TMS.
  • Facilitate Life-Long Learning
SMD encourages materials professionals to continually upgrade their theoretical and practical knowledge of issues and technologies affecting the broad field of structural materials and all related disciplines. To facilitate this, the division sponsors short courses in conjunction with TMS meetings, promotes professional registration, bestows scholarships and provides mentorship to students and young professionals and participates in the accreditation of programs at U.S. academic institutions.
  • Recognize Exemplary Work
In addition to the numerous society-level awards bestowed by TMS that recognize accomplishments in the fields associated with structural materials, there are specific division-level awards that recognize excellence within SMD's scope of activities:
      • SMD Distinguished Materials Scientist/Engineer Award
      • SMD Distinguished Service Award
